Tasty Nation desserts

We're looking for someone in Thoothukudi to open the next Tasty Nation. You already know the queue outside the macaroon bakery on VE Road, and the crowd that lines up for nungu and padhaneer on a hot afternoon — Tuty doesn't need convincing that a cold, sweet treat is worth stopping for. We just haven't seen one place in town yet that does every dessert, every day, under one roof.

A port town that already stops for something cold and sweet

Thoothukudi runs hot almost every day of the year, and the whole town has built its habits around that heat. The roadside nungu and padhaneer carts don't stay stocked for long. The bakeries on VE Road near the Old Bus Stand pull a steady crowd for macaroons and honey cake from morning to night — one of them alone has crossed 5,000 reviews on Google for exactly this. That's not a niche craving, that's an everyday one. Add the salt pans and the container trucks rolling in from V.O. Chidambaranar Port, one of India's major ports, and you get a working town where people genuinely look forward to a sweet break in the day, not just on birthdays.

Who actually walks past a counter here

Students pour out of Kamaraj College, University V.O.C. College of Engineering and A.P.C. Mahalakshmi College for Women every afternoon and head straight for a tea stall, a bakery, or a bike ride down Beach Road. On weekend evenings, families head to Roche Park and the beach to sit, talk and let the kids run — that migration to the water happens almost every Sunday. Add the port and SIPCOT staff who work shifts around the harbour, and the steady trickle of visitors who come for the Basilica of Our Lady of Snows, a 16th-century pilgrimage church that still draws crowds on its feast days. That's a town with a daytime crowd, an evening crowd and a visiting crowd — all three looking for somewhere to sit down with something sweet.

What we found when we actually looked

We ran this through Google Maps ourselves instead of guessing. Search "dessert shop Thoothukudi" and you get a real list of bakeries and ice cream parlours, most rated between 4.2 and 5.0, with the single busiest bakery on VE Road sitting past 5,000 reviews — that is a lot of people walking in for something sweet, regularly. Ice cream parlours across town mostly run small, independent setups with ratings around 4.5-4.9 but only double or triple-digit review counts each, nothing with a big, varied footprint. Search for waffles specifically and the list gets short — a handful of dedicated waffle spots in the whole town, most under 150 reviews. Boba and bubble tea turned up almost nothing dedicated at all; what we found was boba as a side item on a general cafe menu, not a specialist. Cakes and home bakers, on the other hand, are everywhere and clearly in demand, with several crossing 300-500+ reviews. Put it together and the picture is: Thoothukudi already proves people want sweet, cold and fun — but a single counter doing waffles, thickshakes, boba, pancakes, sundaes and hot chocolate together, every day, is something our search simply did not turn up here.

Where in Thoothukudi this could actually sit

Going purely by where the crowd already is, here's where we'd start looking.

  • VE Road, near the Old Bus Stand, Pudugramam (standalone outlet): bakery shoppers, bus travellers and students passing through from morning to night. the single busiest bakery-and-snacking stretch in town, with footfall on foot all day
  • Beach Road, near Roche Park (standalone outlet): families on weekend evenings, once the sun starts going down over the sea. this is where Thoothukudi already goes to sit, snack and watch the sunset together
  • Toovipuram, near the New Bus Stand (standalone outlet): a younger crowd and students out for a shake and a hangout after dark. the stretch nearest the new bus stand already pulls a steady late-evening dessert crowd
  • Velavan Hyper Market, Palayamkottai Road (mall food-court counter): shopping families on weekend trips, all under one indoor roof. the closest thing Thoothukudi has to indoor mall footfall, with a food court already built in
  • Bryant Nagar / VOC College belt (standalone outlet): college students between classes, all day on weekdays. heavy daily foot traffic between VOC College, Kamaraj College and the tea stalls around them

Standalone shop or a mall counter — which fits Tuty

We've run both formats in Chennai and both work. A standalone outlet, run the way our Kay Food Street shop operates, suits a road with steady walk-in traffic all day — VE Road or the stretch near the new bus stand fit that picture. A mall or food-court counter, run the way our Vivira Mall outlet operates, fits a space inside an existing shopping footfall, which in Thoothukudi means somewhere like Velavan Hyper Market's upper-floor food court rather than a standalone building. Which one makes sense for you depends on the site you can get — that's exactly what the discovery call and site evaluation are for.

Who we're hoping reads this page

  • Someone who actually knows Thoothukudi — the heat, the roads, the rhythm of a port town
  • Can be at the counter every single day, not just dropping by now and then
  • Genuinely likes talking to people — regulars, students, families on a Sunday evening
  • Has access to, or a real lead on, a site in VE Road, Beach Road, Toovipuram, or a mall like Velavan Hyper Market
  • Willing to follow our recipes and standards exactly as taught, every time
  • No previous food, kitchen or business experience needed — genuinely none

What you get before you ever open the shutter

Food waste is one of the biggest problems in the food business — a Tasty Nation outlet has almost none. Training takes just 2 days, hands-on at our Chennai outlets, and that's enough — nobody on our own counters started with food or business experience either. You get every recipe and process we use, documented and taught, not improvised. After that it's ongoing support, from ingredient sourcing to marketing materials, the same support we give our own two outlets. The steps from here are simple: you enquire, we get on a call to talk specifics, we evaluate the site together, and then we set up and train. Investment and area requirements are things we go through properly on that call, not something we'd put in writing on a page like this.

Questions about a franchise in Thoothukudi

Thoothukudi gets brutally hot. Is that good or bad for a dessert shop?

It's exactly why this works. The heat is already why roadside nungu and padhaneer carts sell out and why the bakeries stay busy all day — people here are already in the habit of stopping for something cold and sweet.

I've never run a food business before. Can I still do this?

Yes. Training takes just 2 days, hands-on at our Chennai outlets, and that's enough to start at the counter. No previous food, kitchen or business experience is needed.

Should I look for a standalone shop or a spot inside a mall?

Both formats are already proven for us in Chennai. Which one fits depends on the site you can get in Thoothukudi — a road with steady walk-in traffic suits a standalone outlet, while a mall like Velavan Hyper Market suits a food-court counter. We work this out together on the discovery call.

Thoothukudi already has a lot of local bakeries and ice cream shops. Isn't that a lot of competition?

It actually tells us the opposite — it means people here already spend on dessert regularly. What we didn't find anywhere in town, in our own research, was one counter doing waffles, thickshakes, boba, pancakes and hot chocolate together under one roof.

Does being 100% vegetarian matter in a harbour and fishing town like this?

It does, in a quiet way. Being 100% vegetarian means there's one less thing to explain to a landlord, a gated community or a customer, whatever the neighbourhood.

Who we are

We are Tasty Nation, a 100% vegetarian dessert brand from Chennai. Belgian waffles, thickshakes, sundaes, boba shakes, pancakes, brownies and hot chocolate: 85+ items on one menu. We opened at Kay Food Street, Pallikaranai in December 2023, and today we also run a food-court counter at Vivira Mall on OMR. Same recipes, two very different formats, so we can tell you honestly what each one is like to run. Tasty Nation® is a registered trademark (Licence No. 6368235). Why a dessert outlet, and why you can do it

  • People love sweet desserts. A waffle or a thickshake is an everyday treat for every age in Thoothukudi, not something saved for a festival.
  • Almost no waste. Food waste is one of the biggest problems in the food business. A Tasty Nation outlet has almost none.
  • Just 2 days of training. You, or anyone you hire, can start working after two days with us. No previous food, kitchen or business experience needed.
